This small lecture was held in Graphic School of Belgrade on April 21, 2015. Attendees are high-schoolers studying to become graphic designers. Team member and a designer himself, Matija Zlatanović chose the school as the appropriate venue to discuss aspects of visual communication in extremist messages. The talk began with describing the threat and danger of various extremist ideologies, including how they disseminate their views using social networks and sophisticated methods. Later the focus turned to the #underSTAND campaign and its main points, e.g. preventing radicalization by focusing on the individual’s choice. Lecture concluded with the analysis of the “selling points” of extremist propaganda, such as how to unravel their meaning through analyzing the designs and how to provide alternatives to violent narratives. A lively discussion ensued on how people go to great lengths to join extremist organizations and what could be done to prevent that. All in all, much fun was had and participants reported that “they began being interested in things they didn’t even know existed!”
